AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme

Applications are now open for the AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme 2023-2024. The programme aims to empower talented emerging scientists in Africa, enabling them to successfully compete for UKRI MRC and other major funding opportunities in global health research. The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) and MRC are committed to investing in African scientists, enhancing their global health research and leadership potential.

Running from October 2023 to October 2024, the programme comprises two residential workshops and one virtual workshop. The curriculum is designed to support, engage, and enhance participants’ capabilities, empowering them to compete effectively for funding opportunities, build effective teams, collaborate internationally, influence stakeholders, and develop rewarding research careers.

Programme Outline:

  • Three inspiring blended workshops at six-month intervals
  • Supplementary webinars, tutorials, and online resources
  • Baseline and end-of-programme assessments and evaluations
  • Collaboration between participating individuals

The Programme focuses on five themes, tailored to the needs of each cohort:

  1. The Researcher As Leader
  2. The Effective Researcher
  3. The Researcher As Communicator
  4. The Compelling Applicant
  5. The Researcher As Manager

Cost:

  • MRC and AREF will cover the costs of the workshops, as well as accommodation and travel expenses for selected nominees.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be citizens of an African country, employed by a recognized university or research institution in Africa, and be early career researchers leading their own research group. They must hold a research doctorate or medical/clinical qualification with a research-relevant Master’s degree and have experience in obtaining research funding.

Selection Process:

To be accepted, applicants must demonstrate the potential to benefit themselves and their home institution, provide a persuasive personal statement, and obtain a supporting letter from an authorized senior representative of their employing institution.
