African Impact Challenge 2023: Building a Better Future for Africa

The African Impact Challenge 2023 is now open for applications, offering young African innovators the opportunity to address their country’s most pressing challenges through technology. The challenge provides funding, training, and global networking opportunities to help transform the African continent.

About the African Impact Challenge

The African Impact Challenge aims to build a better future for Africa by investing in the continent’s early innovators. The African Impact Initiative focuses on enabling innovators to develop market-creating innovations that tackle the biggest challenges in their countries through technology. Inspired by The Prosperity Paradox, the challenge is held in different African countries each year, having already taken place in Ghana (2020), Kenya (2021), and Rwanda (2022). Last year, a pan-African health entrepreneurship stream was introduced, running concurrently with the country-specific challenge every year as the initiative continues to expand. This year, the challenge will take place in South Africa.

Benefits of African Impact Challenge

The top-performing teams will receive up to $25,000 in grant funding or a simple agreement for future equity (SAFE) investment. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to travel to Toronto for a fully-funded, 3-month stay during the summer to learn and expand their entrepreneurship network.

African Impact Challenge  Eligibility

• Applicants must be young Africans (under 39 years old) living in the countries participating in the year’s challenge.
• Applicants should have a desire to pursue impact-focused entrepreneurship as a means of livelihood.
• They should have a desire to solve critical problems using technology.
• The team building the venture should commit full time to the project.
• Stream 1: Ventures based in South Africa from any sector.
• Stream 2: Ventures across Africa that enable positive health outcomes.

African Impact Challenge Selection Criteria

• Solutions should address an identified problem or challenge in the applicant’s country, providing a comprehensive solution through a clearly defined job to be done.
• Solutions should be technology-enabled in their creation and/or use.
• Preference will be given to solutions targeting non-consumption by increasing adoption, accessibility, or affordability.
• Innovative and scalable business models are preferred.
